How to structure a retainer so it does not become unlimited support.
A retainer works when the client is buying reserved capacity, priority, or an ongoing outcome. It becomes risky when the agreement says monthly fee but the client expects unlimited requests. Use the calculated number as the commercial starting point, then define included hours, turnaround expectations, communication channels, reporting, rollover rules, and how extra work is approved.
For Upwork clients, retainers often start after a successful project or trial month. If you mention a retainer in a proposal, keep it light: explain the first milestone, the outcome you will prove, and what an ongoing monthly support package could include later. That makes the offer feel practical instead of forcing a long-term commitment before trust exists.
